The Valkyries: Those Who Choose the Slain

The Valkyries were not merely warrior maidens. They are agents of fate.

Their name comes from Old Norse valr (the slain in battle) and kjósa (to choose).

Literally: “those who choose the fallen.”

They are sent by Odin to the battlefield to determine which warriors will live and which will die.

They do not carry out death. They recognize it.

They are mediators between the world of the living and the beyond.

Origin and Nature

The sources describe the Valkyries as supernatural female figures associated with:

  • war
  • heroic death
  • fate
  • the transition between worlds

Not all are the same.

They dwell mainly in Asgard, but travel through Midgard constantly.

They are both messengers and guardians.

Appearance and Symbols

They are described as radiant women, armed, riding horses that cross the sky.

Their symbols include:

  • spears
  • shields
  • helmets
  • supernatural horses
  • sometimes swans (in certain poems)

At times they appear as terrifying figures. At others, as luminous maidens.

In Service of Odin

The Valkyries act under Odin’s command.

Their main task is to select the warriors worthy of entering Valhalla: the einherjar.

But their role does not end there. In Valhalla:

  • they serve mead to the warriors
  • accompany the feasts
  • care for the chosen
  • and help train them for Ragnarök

They are part of Odin’s army.

They do not only choose the dead: they prepare them to fight again.

In Valhalla, there is no rest. There is preparation.

Valkyries and Freyja

Although Odin is their primary lord, the Valkyries are also connected to Freyja.

According to the Grímnismál, only half of the fallen go to Valhalla.

The other half is received by Freyja in Fólkvangr, her own domain.

Individual Valkyries

Some Valkyries have their own names and star in entire sagas:

  • Brynhildr
  • Valkyrie Sigrún
  • Hildr
  • Skögul
  • Göndul

Brynhildr is the most famous example: punished by Odin after disobeying one of his orders. As a consequence, she was condemned to live as a mortal woman, to experience love and betrayal, and to die tragically. Only after her death does she return to her condition as a Valkyrie..

In these stories, Valkyries may fall in love with humans, disobey Odin, or temporarily abandon their divine role

Symbolic Associations

Each Valkyrie’s name reflects her function. They are personifications of aspects of combat and fate:

  • Brynhildr — disobedience and tragedy
  • Valkyrie Sigrún — love and loyalty
  • Hildr — eternal battle
  • Skögul — the shock of combat
  • Göndul — magical warfare

Human Valkyries: The Fate They Earn

Although many Valkyries seem to have existed from the beginning as supernatural servants of Odin, several sagas describe a different path: some were once human women.

They are usually exceptional figures:

  • princesses
  • warriors
  • women of noble lineage
  • or heroines marked by destiny

These women stand out for their courage, their will, or their connection to war and honor.

When they die — or when Odin chooses them — they may be elevated to the rank of Valkyries.

This is not a glorious promotion. It is a transformation.

Mortality is left behind, but so is human life: family, love, descendants.

Becoming a Valkyrie means renouncing the world of the living to serve fate.

In heroic sagas, this process is not always voluntary.

The woman ceases to belong to the world… and comes to belong to destiny.

What Do the Valkyries Symbolize?

  • fate
  • purposeful death
  • transition
  • divine choice

The Valkyries represent the inevitability of destiny and the passage between life and death.

Valkyries and Ragnarök

In Ragnarök, the Valkyries will march alongside Odin and the einherjar.

They will not only have chosen the dead: they will also fight.

Their role culminates in the final battle.

The Valkyries embody the Norse vision of fate:

  • not all die by chance
  • not all live by luck
  • death can be a form of honor

They represent the idea that the end of a life may be the beginning of a greater purpose.

They are the hands of fate. They appear when steel clashes, when blood falls, when destiny is decided.

And while men fight believing they control their fate…

they have already chosen who will return.
