The Origin of the Universe. Norse Cosmology

At the beginning of time there was neither sky nor earth, neither sea nor sun. There was only the great primordial void known as Ginnungagap (the magical abyss).

On one side lay, Niflheim (home of mist), a realm of fog, ice, darkness, and death. There flowed a primordial spring called, Hvergelmir (the roaring cauldron), from which sprang twelve frozen rivers known as the Éllivágar (ice waves). At the opposite end of the abyss stood Muspelheim (home of fire), a blazing realm ruled by the fire giant Surtr (the Black), who wielded a flaming sword.

There, in the heart of nothingness, the heat of Muspelheim met the ice of Niflheim in the center of Ginnungagap, and from this collision the first form of life emerged: Ymir: the Screamer), the primordial being, a hermaphroditic giant. While Ymir slept, new giants were born from his sweat: the jötnar (giants of chaos).

At the same time, from the melting ice was born Auôhumla (rich milk), the cosmic cow, a primeval creature that fed on salty frost blocks. From her udders flowed four rivers of milk that nourished Ymir. As Auðhumla licked the salty ice from the stones, she gradually revealed the shape of a man: Búri, the first god.

Búri fathered Borr, who united with the giantess Bestla (tree bark), daughter of the giant Bölthorn (evil thorn). From this union was born the first divine trinity: Odín, Vili y Vé, who represented spirit and will, intelligence, and sacred power respectively. From these three brothers would arise the lineage of the Aesir.

The Origin of the Universe: The Creation of the World

Odin, the eldest, stood out for his wisdom, piercing gaze, and insatiable hunger for knowledge. It was then that the three brothers made a decision that would forever change the course of the cosmos: they slew the giant Ymir. His blood flowed so abundantly that it drowned most of the primordial giants, except for Bergelmir, who escaped with his wife. From them descended the jötnar known today.

From Ymir’s body, the gods shaped the world:

  • His flesh became the earth,
  • His blood became seas, rivers, and lakes,
  • bones formed the mountains,
  • His teeth became stones,
  • His hair turned into trees and forests,
  • His skull became the vaulted sky. Into the sky, the gods placed sparks from Muspelheim as stars and created the Sun and the Moon as living celestial bodies.
  • From Ymir’s eyebrows, they built a wall surrounding the world of humans: Midgard separating and protecting it from the other realms.

Thus the shape of the cosmos was born. The world was formed, and Odin became the ruler of order born from chaos. From this foundational act, he was known as Allföðr, the All-Father..

Sól and Máni: The Living Celestial Bodies

The gods took the two children of a man named Mundilfari (he who moves with time): a beautiful daughter named Sól (Sun) and a son named Máni (Moon), and placed them in the sky.

Sól was set to guide the solar chariot, drawn by two horses: Árvakr (Early Riser) and Alsviðr (Very Swift). To protect them from the burning heat of the sun, the gods placed cooling bellows beneath their shoulders.

Máni, in turn, guides the moon and cares for two children, Hjúki and Bil, whom he took with him from Earth.

Both chariots are eternally pursued by wild wolves: Sköll , who chases Sól, and Hati , who hunts Máni.

When the wolves finally catch their prey, Ragnarök will begin—the end of the world. Ragnarök, el fin del mundo.

The First Humans

As they walked along the shore, Odin, Vili, and Vé found two tree trunks: one of ash and the other of elm or vine. From them they created the first human beings: Ask (ash / bark) and Embla (vine).

Odin gave them the breath of life (önd), Vili granted them consciousness and mind (vit), and Vé bestowed form (), along with senses, speech, and appearance.

The gods gave them Midgard as their home and surrounded it with Ymir’s eyebrows to protect them from the outer chaos.
