His name was <strong>Nemed's people<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/huellasdelpasado.eu\/en\/lebor-gabala-eireann-libro-invasiones-irlanda\/\">Lebor Gab\u00e1la \u00c9renn<\/a><\/strong> (<em>The Book of the Taking of Ireland<\/em>), Nemed led his people to Ireland, inaugurating a new chapter in the cycle of the <a href=\"https:\/\/huellasdelpasado.eu\/en\/invasiones-miticas-de-irlanda\/\">mythical invasions<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although his story began with hope, it would become one of the most tragic in all of Irish tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who Was Nemed?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The medieval sources present Nemed as a noble leader descended from the ancient survivors of the Great Flood.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like the other peoples described in the <em>Lebor Gab\u00e1la \u00c9renn<\/em>, Nemed's genealogy was connected by medieval monks to the lineage of Noah, incorporating ancient Irish traditions into biblical history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like Parthol\u00f3n, he arrived accompanied by his family and numerous followers with the intention of settling permanently in Ireland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During his rule, the transformation of the island continued. The legends tell that they defeated various Fomorian leaders and managed to maintain a period of relative stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That stability, however, would not last forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After Nemed died from illness, the Fomorians regained control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fomorian Rule<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With Nemed gone, the Fomorians imposed harsh rule upon his people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The medieval sources describe a time of great suffering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every year, during the festival of <strong>Samhain<\/strong>, the Nemedians were forced to pay a heavy tribute to the Fomorians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some versions claim that it consisted of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>two-thirds of their children;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>two-thirds of their cattle;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>two-thirds of their harvests.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although the details vary among different traditions, they all present this tribute as the important moments of the Celtic calendar, symbolizing the beginning of winter and the turning of the yearly cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conand's Tower<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The center of Fomorian power was a fortress known as <strong>Conand's Tower<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the legends, it belonged to the Fomorian leader <strong>Conand<\/strong> and stood on an island traditionally identified with present-day <strong>Tory Island<\/strong>, off the coast of County Donegal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From there, the Fomorians ruled and collected the tribute imposed upon the Nemedians.<\/p>\n\n\n<style>.kb-image3047_f79b2f-b5 class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tower would become one of the most important settings in the entire narrative of the mythical invasions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Great Rebellion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unable to endure their situation any longer, the Nemedians decided to rebel. They assembled a great army and sailed to Conand's Tower.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The legends tell that they captured the fortress, killed Conand, and destroyed the tower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At last, it seemed they had regained their freedom.\nBut the victory was short-lived.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soon afterward, an immense Fomorian fleet led by <strong>Morc<\/strong> (also known as <strong>Morc mac Dela) arrived.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A devastating battle followed.
