Before the Fir Bolg. Even before many of the mythical peoples arrived in Ireland, the legends already spoke of a dark presence associated with the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They were <strong>Fomorians<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mysterious, powerful, and feared, they appear time and again in the tales of the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/huellasdelpasado.eu\/en\/lebor-gabala-eireann-libro-invasiones-irlanda\/\">Lebor Gab\u00e1la \u00c9renn<\/a><\/em> (<em>The Book of the Taking of Ireland<\/em>), becoming one of the most important peoples in all of Irish mythology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They were not simply the enemies of a single people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They fought against Parthol\u00f3n.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They fought against Nemed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They fought against the Tuatha D\u00e9 Danann.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And for generations, they became one of the great forces that shaped the mythical destiny of Ireland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who Were the Fomorians?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Answering this question is not easy. Medieval Irish sources do not always agree on their origins and present different versions of their story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In some accounts, they appear as supernatural beings connected to the sea. In others, as ancient inhabitants of Ireland. They are also described as giants, warriors, pirates, or powerful entities associated with the primal forces of nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their very name has been the subject of debate for centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some scholars have connected the term with ideas associated with the sea, the underworld, or dark and chaotic forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What is certain is that, within Irish tradition, the Fomorians represent something far greater than simply an enemy people. One example is <strong>Elatha<\/strong>, a Fomorian king and the father of <strong>Bres<\/strong>, who would later become king of the Tuatha D\u00e9 Danann.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fact, some of the most important figures in Irish mythology descend from both lineages.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Early Fomorian Leaders<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the earliest <a href=\"https:\/\/huellasdelpasado.eu\/en\/invasiones-miticas-de-irlanda\/\">mythical invasions<\/a>, the sources do not yet present a clear list of great Fomorian kings. Instead, different chiefs or leaders appear in connection with different conflicts, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Cichol Gricenchos<\/strong>, defeated by Parthol\u00f3n at Magh Itha<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Conand<\/strong>, lord of Conand's Tower<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Morc<\/strong>, who led the Fomorian fleet against the Nemedians<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over time, the traditions would focus their attention on other, far better-known rulers whose stories occupy a prominent place within the Irish Mythological Cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fomorian Kings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the most important kings are:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Indech<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Elatha<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tethra<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Balor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Fomorians appear under the rule of different kings depending on the period and tradition. His figure would become one of the most famous in all of Irish mythology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, his story is closely connected to another figure destined to change the fate of \nIreland: <strong>Lugh.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Prophecy of Balor\nBuarainech usually appears as Balor's father.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Buarainech aparece normalmente como el padre de Balor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sources vary as to whether Balor had a single wife. However, his most famous story revolves around his daughter <strong>Ethniu (Eithne)<\/strong> and a prophecy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Prophecy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to tradition, a druid announces a prophecy to Balor:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou will die at the hands of your grandson.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To prevent it from coming true, Balor imprisons Ethniu on an island, in a tower, or in an isolated fortress, intending to ensure that she never has children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bir\u00f3g (or Birog), a powerful druidess or sorceress, knows of the prophecy and decides to help bring it to fulfilment. Using her magic, she leads Cian to the fortress where Ethniu is imprisoned.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There, the two meet and conceive a child. From their union, <strong>Lugh<\/strong>is born, destined to fulfil the prophecy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From this point onward, the different Irish traditions begin to diverge in some details of the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In some versions, Ethniu gives birth to triplets. When Balor discovers the pregnancy, he orders the children to be killed. They are wrapped in cloth or placed in a sack and thrown into the sea.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of them survives: Lugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bir\u00f3g intervenes once again and rescues the child from the sea before giving him to his father, Cian. Lugh is raised by different figures, including the sea god <strong>Manannan mac Lir<\/strong> and <strong>Tailtiu<\/strong>, depending on the tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In other versions, Ethniu and Cian have only one child: Lugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Balor likewise attempts to dispose of the child by throwing him into the sea, but he:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>is rescued by Bir\u00f3g;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>is raised in secret by the Tuatha D\u00e9 Danann.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In some versions, the confrontation between Balor and Lugh eventually becomes one of the most important moments of the <strong>Second Battle of Mag Tuired.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cian (C\u00edan) is the son of the healing god <strong>Dian C\u00e9cht<\/strong>, one of the great gods of the Tuatha D\u00e9 Danann.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Years later, Cian will be murdered by the three sons of Tuireann, giving rise to another important Irish legend: <strong>The Fate of the Children of Tuireann<\/strong>, in which Lugh demands compensation for his father's With them, the Fomorians once again played a central role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sources tell that they imposed extremely harsh tributes upon the Nemedians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some versions claim that they demanded two-thirds of their children, their crops, and their cattle. The threat that returns whenever stability seems to have been achieved. Irish tradition identifies this place with the fortress of the Fomorian king Balor and connects it with some of the most famous episodes in Irish mythology, including the legends of Conand's Tower and the birth of the hero Lugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>Conand's Tower<\/strong>, according to Irish tradition, was located on Tory Island, where medieval texts place the fortress of the Fomorians.
