Several events considered especially fortunate for the first emperor and for the birth of the new imperial order had taken place during this month.

Over the centuries, Augustus eventually became our modern August.

Augustus was not the first Roman to receive such an honor. In 44 BC, following the death of Julius Caesar, Quintilis had already been renamed lulius (July) en su honor.

The August Election

Unlike Julius Caesar, whose name was given to Quintilis after his death as a posthumous tribute, Augustus received this honor during his lifetime.

According to ancient sources—particularly Macrobius—some of the most significant events of Augustus' career took place during this month:

his first consulship

the incorporation of Egypt into Roman rule after the defeat of Mark Antony and Cleopatra

the end of the civil wars that gave rise to the new imperial order

Since Sextilis had proven especially fortunate for Augustus, the Senate chose to honor him by changing its name.

More than a simple calendar reform, the decision symbolized the profound transformation of Rome and the immense prestige of the man who had become the founder of the Roman Empire.

Harvest Time

August was a period of intense agricultural activity. Farmers celebrated the end of the most demanding weeks of summer.

And amid festivals dedicated to Diana, Consus, Vulcan, and Jupiter, the city seemed to breathe for a few peaceful days before continuing its yearly cycle.

Curiosities

Myth vs. Reality: Did Augustus Add a Day to August?

A popular belief claims that Augustus added an extra day to August so that it would have the same number of days as July, the month dedicated to Julius Caesar.

According to this story, August supposedly increased from thirty to thirty-one days.

Modern historians, however, consider this to be a later legend. The lengths of the months had already been established through Julius Caesar's Julian calendar reform.

The Month That Witnessed Augustus' Death

Curiously, the month that received Augustus' name was also the month in which he died.

Emperor Augustus died on August 19, AD 14, at Nola. Following his death, his body was carried to Rome in a solemn procession before being cremated in the Campus Martius.

Follow the Footprints

Its Legacy Lives On...

Ferragosto is the direct descendant of the ancient Feriae Augusti.

The word Ferragosto derives from the Latin Feriae Augusti and is celebrated every August 15, remaining one of Italy's most important holidays.

Today it is celebrated with:

family gatherings (one traditional dish is chicken with peppers, especially popular in Rome)

trips to the beach or mountains

outdoor meals

holidays and travel

local festivals

concerts and community events

In central Rome, the Gran Ballo di Ferragosto is one of the city's most popular modern street celebrations, featuring music, traditional dancing, performances, and cultural activities.

Although customs have changed over the centuries, Ferragosto remains one of Italy's great summer celebrations.

August 15 also coincides with one of Christianity's major feasts: The Assumption of the Virgin Mary. This celebration began in the Christian East between the fifth and sixth centuries AD and eventually became firmly established on August 15.

There is no definitive evidence that the Christian feast derives directly from the ancient Feriae Augusti or the Nemoralia dedicated to Diana.
However, some historians have pointed to symbolic continuities and the coincidence of dates between the two celebrations.

Today, in many parts of Europe, Christian tradition and the cultural heritage of ancient Rome continue to coexist.

More than two thousand years later, millions of Italians still celebrate Ferragosto. Empires have disappeared. Cities have changed. The world has transformed. Yet every August 15, through family gatherings, shared meals, and days of rest, the echo of Augustus' ancient Feriae Augusti still survives.

Perhaps without realizing it, we continue to celebrate a small legacy of Ancient Rome.

Visit It Today...

Temple of the Divine Augustus

The Temple of the Divine Augustus was one of the principal monuments dedicated to Rome's first emperor.

Its remains can still be seen within the Roman Forum, where visitors may contemplate the surviving vestiges of the place that honored Augustus' memory for centuries.

SECULAR HYMN
Chorus of Young Men and Maidens:
O Phoebus, and you, Diana, mighty in the forests, radiant lights of heaven, forever worshipped and forever worthy of worship, hear our prayers on these days made sacred by the verses of the Sibyl.
