It was not exactly an island\u2026 nor entirely a realm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was something in between. It cannot be reached by ordinary paths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not everyone can access Avalon. It is reached:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>by destiny<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>by invitation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>in altered states (wounded, in transition, through magic)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It can only be reached when:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the world opens<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the veil grows thinner<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>or fate allows it<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In many Celtic myths, access to the Otherworld occurs through:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>lakes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>islands<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sacred hills (s\u00eddhe)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Avalon brings all these elements together. They represent:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>hidden knowledge<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the connection to the unseen<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the passage between worlds<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Alongside them appear other beings such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>priestesses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>fairies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>fae beingsfae beings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>guardians<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>entities of the Otherworld<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Different Time<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In Avalon, time does not flow as it does in the human world. A moment can be eternal\u2026 or centuries may pass without being perceived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is one of the most characteristic features of the Celtic Otherworld: the rupture of linear time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whoever enters Avalon\u2026 leaves behind the rules of the known world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Between Reality and Legend<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the centuries, Avalon has been interpreted in many ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a real island<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a literary myth<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a spiritual symbol<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>But within the Celtic context, it is something deeper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Avalon represents:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>access to the unknown<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>contact with another reality<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the mystery beyond the visible<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Avalon is one of the many names of the Otherworld in Celtic mythology, alongside places such as T\u00edr na n\u00d3g, Annwn, and Mag Mell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where the Visible World Fades<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Avalon has not disappeared. It remains present in stories, legends, and symbols.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not as a destination we can find on a map, but as a space where the world shifts\u2026 and where those who cross over cease to be who they once were.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Avalon is, perhaps, a memory of something that has always been there.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Waiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Avalon and King Arthur<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most well-known stories links Avalon to <strong>King Arthur<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of the Arthurian cycle, Mordred \u2014 Arthur\u2019s son or nephew, depending on the version \u2014 attempts to seize power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They face each other at the Battle of Camlann.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arthur kills Mordred, but is gravely wounded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He is then taken by boat to Avalon by mysterious female figures, often identified as the \nLadies of the Lake.<\/p>\n\n\n<style>.kb-image1761_9d6d87-02 healing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a refuge<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a promise of return<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Arthur does not fully belong to history\u2026 nor entirely to class=\"wp-block-heading\">Glastonbury, King Arthur, and Avalon<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>During the reign of Henry II of England in the 12th century, some monks claimed to have discovered at Glastonbury Abbey:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>an oak coffin<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>human remains<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and a cross with a Latin inscription<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>According to their account, it was the tomb of King Arthur, and the inscription placed him in Avalon:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>\u201cHic iacet sepultus inclitus rex Arthurus in insula Avalonia\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<cite>\u201cHere lies the renowned King Arthur in the island of invention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later on, even Edward I of England was present at ceremonies related to this discovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since then, Glastonbury has been associated with Avalon, especially places such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Glastonbury Tor<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the Abbey<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, in the ruins of the Abbey, two signs mark the place where, according to tradition, the remains of King Arthur were found.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One indicates that the monks <strong>excavated in search of the tombs<\/strong>, while another states that <strong>the bodies were said to have been found there<\/strong>, reflecting the uncertainty surrounding this episode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sign at the Site Where Arthur\u2019s Remains Were Said to Be Found:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">\u201cIn the year 1191, it is said that the bodies of King Arthur and his queen were found on the south side of the Lady Chapel. On April 19, 1278, their remains were transferred in the presence of King Edward I and Queen Eleanor to a black marble tomb at this site. This tomb remained until the dissolution of the Abbey in 1539.\u201d<\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sign at the Old Cemetery Area:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\">\u201cSite of the old cemetery, where in 1191 the monks excavated to find the tombs of Arthur and
