At others, as luminous maidens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In Service of Odin<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Valkyries act under Odin\u2019s command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their main task is to select the warriors worthy of entering Valhalla: the <strong>einherjar.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But their role does not end there. In Valhalla:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>they serve mead to the warriors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>accompany the feasts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>care for the chosen<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and help train only choose the dead: they prepare them to fight again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Valhalla, there is no rest. There is preparation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Valkyries and Freyja<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Odin is their primary lord, the Valkyries are also connected to Freyja.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the <em>Gr\u00edmnism\u00e1l<\/em>, only half of the fallen go to Valhalla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other half is received by Freyja in <strong>F\u00f3lkvangr<\/strong>, her own domain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Individual Valkyries<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Some Valkyries have their own names and star in entire sagas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Brynhildr<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Valkyrie Sigr\u00fan<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hildr<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sk\u00f6gul<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>G\u00f6ndul<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Brynhildr is the most famous example: punished by Odin after disobeying one of his orders. As a consequence, she was condemned to live as a mortal woman, to experience love and betrayal, and to die tragically. They are personifications of aspects of combat and fate:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Brynhildr<\/strong> \u2014 disobedience and tragedy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Valkyrie Sigr\u00fan<\/strong> \u2014 love and loyalty<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hildr <\/strong>\u2014 eternal battle<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sk\u00f6gul<\/strong> \u2014 the shock of combat<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>G\u00f6ndul<\/strong> \u2014 magical warfare<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Human Valkyries: The Fate They Earn<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although many Valkyries seem to have existed from the beginning as supernatural servants of Odin, several sagas describe a different path: some were once human women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are usually exceptional figures:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>princesses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>warriors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>women of noble lineage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>or heroines marked by destiny<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These women stand out for their courage, their will, or their connection to war and honor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When they die \u2014 or when Odin chooses them \u2014 they may be elevated to the rank of Valkyries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not a glorious promotion.
