It was a space where knowledge was studied, debated, and created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Serapeum: the \u201csecond library\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the main Library, there was another major collection of texts in the <strong>Serapeum<\/strong>, a temple dedicated to the god Serapis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This space functioned as an extension of the Library.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some ancient sources suggest that it eventually housed a significant part of its collection.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alexandria did not have just one library. class=\"wp-block-heading\">The desire to gather all books<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most fascinating aspects of the Library of Alexandria was its ambition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It sought to collect all the texts of the known world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To achieve this, remarkable methods were used:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>ships arriving at the port were inspected<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>manuscripts were copied<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>copies were returned<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>originals were kept in the Library<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This effort turned Alexandria into the greatest repository of knowledge of its time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is estimated that it may have housed between <strong>400,000 and 700,000 scrolls<\/strong>, although figures vary depending on the sources.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An unprecedented center of knowledge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the brightest minds of the ancient world worked in the Library:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Euclid \u2192 mathematics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Eratosthenes \u2192 calculation of the Earth's circumference<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Aristarchus of Samos \u2192 heliocentric model<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Archimedes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Disciplines studied there included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The great mystery: its destruction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The disappearance of the Library of Alexandria remains one of the greatest mysteries in history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no single event that explains its destruction. They were also studied, compared, and corrected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most well-known cases is that of Homer\u2019s works.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Iliad<\/em> and <em>The Odyssey<\/em> had been transmitted orally for centuries, which led to multiple versions with small differences:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>added or removed verses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>variations in wording<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>changes in the order of passages<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Scholars began to compare these versions. They acquired manuscripts, analyzed texts, and attempted to reconstruct a version as faithful as possible to the original.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To do this, they developed methods that we now associate with philology:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>comparison of manuscripts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>critical annotations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>selection of variants<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This work not only preserved Homer\u2019s works. But of what it could have been.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A reminder of the fragility of knowledge\u2026 and the importance of preserving
